Peridot Meaning & Symbolism
Peridot is thought to ward off negativity and enhance personal growth and confidence. Its bright, sunny green is associated with new beginnings and optimism.
History & Origins of Peridot
Peridot has been mined for more than 3,500 years, with some of the earliest known examples coming from the volcanic island of Zabargad in the Red Sea. Ancient Egyptians called it the "gem of the Sun" and believed it glowed with a warm light that could repel evil spirits, especially when set in gold.
The Romans called peridot "evening emerald" because its green remained vivid even by lamplight. Some of the gems in cathedral treasuries long mistaken for emerald — including famous examples at Cologne Cathedral — are in fact peridot. Remarkably, peridot has also been found in meteorites and in lava erupted from Hawaiian volcanoes.
