Tanzanite Meaning & Symbolism
Tanzanite is associated with transformation, spiritual awareness, and the unveiling of inner truth. Its mesmerizing blue-violet hue is believed to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual realms.
History & Origins of Tanzanite
Tanzanite is one of the newest gemstones in the jewellery world, discovered in 1967 by Maasai herders near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania — the only place on Earth where it is found. Tiffany & Co. recognised its potential and launched a major campaign in 1968, naming it after its country of origin.
The stone's vivid blue-violet colour, which can rival fine sapphire, comes from the mineral zoisite. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association added tanzanite as an official December birthstone, making it the first stone to be added to the modern birthstone list since 1912.
Alternative December Birthstones
