Tanzanite, December's rarer birthstone, is found in only one place on earth — a small area in northern Tanzania at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Its rich violet-blue is associated with transformation, spiritual clarity and the ability to see situations with fresh eyes. It's a young gem compared to the others on this list (only discovered in 1967), but its presence is unmistakable.
